Be The Master of Your Own Domain »
Posted on February 6th, 2009 by Paul Woodhouse in Internet | 2 Comments

I want this to serve as a cautionary tale – that even us so-called ‘professionals’ sometimes get it wrong.

You see, when I started out, I did what most people do and looked for the cheapest hosting. You’ve no real idea as to how busy you’ll get and it’ll be a nice problem to have further down the line if you’re getting hits from Uncle Tom Cobbleigh and all.

And another thing that seems quite nice with your unlimited-host-whatever-you-can-throw-at-us-platinum-deluxe-premium package is that you normally receive a free domain.

How can you turn down $4.95 a month for all-you-can-host plus a free domain? Yes, I found it quite alluring too.

Now I’m not going to bore you with the perils of cheap hosting, but I am going to badger you about your domain.

Election Day Paid Search Comparison: How do Obama and McCain Rate? »
Posted on November 4th, 2008 by Justin Seibert in DOM News, Google Adwords, Internet, Microsoft adCenter, PPC, Paid Search, Political Marketing, SEM, Search Engine Reputation Management, Search Engines, Web Credibility, Yahoo Search Marketing | Leave A Comment

Don’t know if you’re aware, but there’s some sort of election thing going on today.  Apparently one of the things you can vote on is President of the United States of America, which sounds like an important post.

With that, let’s take a fairly extensive look into what the candidates are doing today in their paid search campaigns, shall we?

Large Hadron Collider and Other Earth Shattering Discoveries »

I don’t know the exact percentages, but there’s a chance life, the universe, and everything may cease to be at some point tomorrow. I’m not too sure of the time, but I think anybody on the Pacific coast will be fast asleep.

So, no complaints there then.

ALT - Not Knowing these 3 Letters could Cost You $6 Million »
Posted on August 29th, 2008 by Justin Seibert in E-commerce, Government Marketing, Internet, SEO, Web Development | 5 Comments

I’m a frugal person.  I used to say cheap, but I know a business owner who reuses his own dental floss - now that’s cheap and probably unsanitary.  So when I see a company pay a $6 million settlement for not knowing - or caring - about the most basic of search engine optimization (SEO) functions, I choke on my Cap’n Crunch.

The target company who raised the ire of the plaintiff in this case?

Is Your Customer Service in it for the Long U-Haul? »
Posted on August 27th, 2008 by Paul Woodhouse in Internet, Press Strategies, Social Media, Web Credibility | 5 Comments

This past couple of weeks has been the best of times, but it’s also been the worst of times. I foolhardily coordinated our move back up round Cleveland the same weekend I left for England to go and surprise my Gran for her 90th. Yet it takes somebody who bleeds idiot or has serious luck issues to rent a 24 foot U-Haul truck that has a zombie battery, locks their keys in the trunk, misses flights, spends an exorbitant amount one way to get to their connecting flight only for it to be canceled on arrival, and has their laptop screen broken.

I get a little bit peeved at my lifelong insistence on jazzing up the mundane to heart attack proportions, but all in all I’m quite Zen about stuff going wrong or right. Fists pummeling dashboards is nothing more than a meditative chi release.

Blogs are Crap - More Fallout from the WVU eMBA Scandal »
Posted on August 12th, 2008 by Justin Seibert in Business Blogging, DOM News, Government Marketing, Internet, Local News, Local Search, Search Engine Reputation Management, Web Credibility | 5 Comments

Rarely do I literally stop everything I’m doing to read an article.  Or post a comment.  Or write a blog.  I hit the trifecta today.

Just when I thought I had said all I could say about the WVU eMBA scandal from an online reputation management perspective, I was sent a link to this article:

Interim WVU president has big goals — but don’t count on him blogging

Slammer for Fake Blog Spammers »
Posted on May 30th, 2008 by Paul Woodhouse in Business Blogging, Internet, Online Marketing | 6 Comments

Did you know that it’s now a criminal offense - punishable by up to two years in jail - for any marketer/marketing firm/staff of marketing firm caught churning out fake blogs, fake reviews and other similar shady marketing practices online across Europe?

Read this and vent your first amendment spleens in the comments.

I shall be looking to make a citizen’s arrest on any commenter who attempts to shill a product and will invoke Godwin’s Law with impunity.

(The) Understanding Elites »

I’m empathizing with West Virginia today as the whole nation - nay the world - lumps the state into the ‘West Virginia doesn’t matter’ category or the ‘West Virginia doesn’t matter and they’re a bunch of redneck racists’ category.

This Particular Blog Entry is Really, Really Neat »
