Extreme Online Reputation Management: WVU, Mylan, & Governor’s Office Edition »

In getting ready for the Next Generation Marketing series across West Virginia this spring, I began thinking about my presentation on Engagement and Dialogue. In it, I will go over the premise and some recommendations for online reputation management. The last time I spoke about that publicly was at the Online Marketing: Innovations that Work marketing conference in Southpointe, PA when I delivered They Said What? Protect Your Reputation with Search Engine Marketing.
I really want to do a post on the subject - if only there were some really big public scandal involving reputations being changed on the internet that involved West Virginia and the Pittsburgh, PA area. Hmmm. Let’s see. [shuffles through piles of old newspapers by desk - who needs the internet?]
Oh that’s right - how about Heather Bresch? Do a search on her name, particularly a news search, and see what you come up with. For those readers either too lazy to do the search or too enthralled with my hypnotic musings (read: put you in a catatonic state), it comes down to the following:
Ms. Bresch was promoted to Chief Operating Officer of Mylan, Incorporated in October 2007. In doing some fact checking for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a reporter named Patricia Sabatini called West Virginia University to verify that Ms. Bresch had received her Masters of Business Administration there. WVU could not find any record of it.
The pieces of information that have the makings of a good scandal, but may or may not actually mean anything include: Ms. Bresch is the daughter of Governor Joe Manchin; she has previous dealings with WVU President Mike Garrison; and Mylan’s head is WVU’s largest benefactor.
Fast forward two seasons.

View of Pendle Hill overlooking Nelson from outside my local pub.
This past week I’ve been unceremoniously reminded on more than one occasion of my old stomping ground via the medium of TV. I’m originally from a place called Nelson, which is in the borough of Pendle that sits next to Burnley. Not everybody has necessarily heard of Nelson in the UK, so Burnley, which they have, is used as its geographical surrogate. Over here, there’s very little point mentioning either, so it makes sense to use the mighty Manchester to explain my roots - even though I would never claim to come from there.

Why I’m Suing Google for Early April Tomfoolery »

Easter Sunday I had to spend with the mother-in-law.
Honestly, it wasn’t or isn’t as stark and foreboding an occasion as I made it sound in that particularly bleak sentence. I like my mother-in-law a lot - she doesn’t think I do and I never tell I do, but I feel better for having the subconscious upper hand. Think of it like in-law emotional arm wrestling and, in that metaphorical regard, I’m the snapper of tendons.
But if she didn’t snap back by making me a birthday cake and combining an Easter and birthday tea all in to one. I’m all for killing two birds with one stone.
I won’t go into attendees as I’ll be here until a week next Thursday. Suffice it to say, we had a full dining table. I can’t recall the last time I had to blow out non-comedic candles in front of a full throng, but I don’t doubt for a second that my lungs weren’t the deflated tar sacks they are now. Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing »

My esteemed colleague, Mr. Paul Woodhouse, mentioned in his most recent blog that he’s not one to fall in love easily. While that type of cynical temperament is to be expected from a Brit (and a fine Brit he be, as best they come), the same cannot be said of this Celtic lad (a far superior bloodline, if you ask me). I literally fall in love at the drop of a dime.

Mmmm - my size 10 Johnston & Murphy tastes pretty good. Maybe that’s why I try to cram it in there so often. I went almost 2 years without causing a stir and now I can’t go 2 posts without doing something stupid. If I didn’t mind coming off like a meathead, I could probably be a pretty good link baiter.
Yesterday I posted an interview with David Temple about paid search certification and SEO training. In case you don’t want to click back or try to split screen two browser windows, I offered: Continue reading →

Search Engine Marketing Certification: Paid Search & SEO »

As the half-dozens of regular readers of the Direct Online Marketing™ Blog know, Derrick “McKinley’s Bodyguard” McKee recently came on board to our search team. Before deciding on him I was able to speak with several talented folk.
One was a young woman in school down in Georgia who had studied internet marketing in school and played around with it on the side. She asked where she could get training on learning more while she awaited graduation.
I threw out a few places, giving costs and my 2 cents. After all, I’ve had my search marketing training and certifications over the years and design the training our employees get. But what a perfect opportunity to ask an expert in the arena.

Cute political commentary from Reuters or maybe I shouldn’t have used the pic?
Hunter S. Thompson turned me onto American politics. That’s probably quite a dangerous thing, but true. I wouldn’t really describe myself as a junkie, but this particular election I’m watching with great interest seeming it’s my first from inside America and I’ll get to see it all unravel like a badly crocheted bra first hand.
Of course, only 24/7 rolling news could turn a load of pig farmers popping round to each other’s houses and firing the first election shot from the equivalent of a spud gun into a world-shattering event. Yes, I’m well aware there’s another eleven months of this to go.

I have two young children, the oldest 2 1/2. She’s a little afraid of the big guy in the red suit, but she likes the Christmas tree and holiday specials, especially the Grinch (the classic one). So we weren’t really sure if she’d ‘get’ Christmas this year or not.
So when we had to wake her at 7:30 we figured this wouldn’t be the year. And when we asked her if she wanted to go open presents, she replied, “no.” Definitely not 2007. Continue reading →

Of Apologies, Black Hatting, & More – Follow up to the Mitchell Report Post »

Last week I posted about the Mitchell Report and how the accused baseball players could use search engine reputation management to protect their future earning capacities. I did not get into the ridiculousness of Donald Fehr, how football probably has an even bigger problem with HGH, or any of the other interesting side topics.
During my post, I made a side comment about a site that touched off a bit of a firestorm. Really more of a warmstorm or whatever is less than a firestorm, but more comments than we typically get on a post at least since we converted to Wordpress. This post is all about those comments, so to understand it, you should start by reading them first.
A few points in number format for no other reason than because I like outlines.

For as busy as I am, I waste WAY too much time on sports. I mean, what do they add? The good times are greatly outweighed by the bad. And if I do try to draw parallels from the sports world into internet marketing, often times the results are usually disastrous for all involved.
