isPermaLink="false">http://www.directom.com/internet-marketing-blog/?p=424#comment-284

Great blog post. I have 1,060 friends on Facebook as of this moment. That's after the burning of 10 friends (5 of which I had no idea who they were, 1 was a creeper, and 4 were buddies I wanted to joke with who have already been re-added). Yesterday I made a public observation on my status that I, "have no idea who the majority of my Facebook friends are," which apparently is a big social networking no-no. I drew wide criticism from actual friends (of the "Let's grab a beer" variety), aquaintances (of the "Oh, I forgot to call you to grab a beer but now that you're here, what are you drinking?" variety) and absolute strangers (of the "Sorry, I just got a new phone, who is this?" variety). Apparently, the general concensus is that my status was rude, in poor taste, and showcased poor marketing (?!?!) practices. What I've learned, and I guess what even semi-public figures should learn, is that despite setting up an official page or community for whatever it is that they do (for my music, it's a MySpace page coupled with DerrickMcKee.com), every and any public profile is viewed as a "product" page. So, despite me wanting to keep my Facebook as a personal page aimed at nurturing true-life connections and my inappropriate sense of humor (see: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=38645259&l=861d5&id=25805859), adoring fans will not be denied any and every way to connect with you. Thus, I basically insulted my a segment of my fan base with my status. Hopefully, fans are like my buddy's girlfriend and come back despite poor treatment (I kid! I kid!).Either way, I'm going to search for a solution to this problem because there really does need to be a line drawn between public (MySpace) and personal (Facebook) life. I don't want stalkers to know that I'll be at the Alpha tonight.

Great blog post. I have 1,060 friends on Facebook as of this moment.
