How This Healthcare Company Moved to Number 1 in AI Search

According to Adobe, 77% of U.S. ChatGPT users treat it like a search engine. Nearly a quarter of them go to ChatGPT before Google, before Bing, before anything else. Gen Z leads the way, with 28% starting there every time. One in three say they trust it more than any traditional search engine. And maybe the most telling number? Over a third of users say they’ve discovered a new product or brand through ChatGPT.

Search behavior shifted quietly, then all at once. People still type keywords into Google, sure. They also ask full questions and expect a clean answer right away, no scrolling required. AI decides which brands get quoted and which ones get skipped over like yesterday’s news.

Companies that fail to adapt watch impressions fade, clicks dry up, and competitors move into the spotlight. This healthcare software company sat right on that edge. Strong product, solid reputation, visibility headed the wrong direction. That is where we stepped in, sleeves rolled up, eyes on the machine.

Building for the Machine, Not the Algorithm

SEO hasn’t disappeared. It’s just working a new shift and AI is running the floor. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews don’t read pages the same way humans do. They don’t care about clever intros or polished copy. They want fast, structured, fact-first content that tells them what to say and who to say it about.

So that’s exactly what we gave them. We started with our client’s existing product pages. Well-written, accurate, helpful and invisible to the machines that mattered. We built content with one goal: make it crawlable in seconds, quotable in half that, all without losing the spark that makes good content a pleasurable experience for humans and robots alike.

Every page got a new FAQ section optimized for AI eyes. Short questions, short answers, no fluff. We worked in keyword-rich phrasing, brand repetition, and product-level claims that AI could identify and echo. The structure did the heavy lifting.

This wasn’t a hunch. It was a test with a control group, tracked results, and measurable lift. The AI noticed and rewarded it fast.

Content That Feeds the Beast(s)

The FAQs weren’t tucked in at the bottom like an afterthought. They became the heartbeat of each page. Every question was chosen with intent: something real people type into search bars, and something AI systems are built to resolve fast.

We pulled query data, scanned competitor answers, and rewrote responses to favor clarity over cleverness. This was precision work. Structured, factual, brand-forward.

“Who makes the best LMS for healthcare compliance?” is a question with a right answer. We made sure AI found it.

Offsite Optimization That Reinforced the Story

In the preceding era of dominated completely by Google, we were in the age of blogs, a veritable golden age of on-page SEO. But AI generative engines have made off-page SEO a priority again. That’s because AI doesn’t trust your website just because you say something. It wants to hear it from other sources too.

We built backlinks with a clear purpose: press releases, industry mentions, and third-party placements that echoed the same phrasing from our optimized FAQs. The messaging stayed consistent. The keywords matched. The brand name kept showing up in all the right places.

We’re not back to the days of link building with giant lists of backlink URLs. We wanted targeted reinforcement that trained the AI to associate our healthcare software company with the answers people were searching for. Something unexpected that we learned from this was that you don’t even need a link back to the website to make the LLMs understand. If you get out the good news of your product, even without links back to your page, you’ll find that good news repeated by AI.

The Results Didn’t Take Months

One of the most surprising lessons from our testing is how quickly the generative engines catch up with the latest updates. When it’s not sluggishly giving you outdated info from its training data, it can be extremely, shockingly up-to-date.

After the updates went live, the healthcare software company watched 14 of their core product keywords jump straight to the first position in AI-generated answers. We’re not used to seeing the needle move so quickly on the SEO side of our business, and since our GEO experts cut their teeth on those tried and true SEO methods (the same ones that still form the core of our generative engine optimizations), immediate visibility was not something we expected.

Pages that had been stuck on page two started getting quoted word-for-word by the AI. An added bonus of these more targeted searches are that the leads are, generally speaking, warmer than others. After all, somebody searching “what is the best LMS for healthcare compliance” is further along the buyer’s journey than somebody who wants to know what LMS stands for (learning management system, if you’re curious).

SEO That Doesn’t Wait

The old rhythm of SEO (publish, wait, tweak, wait some more) isn’t the same for GEO. Generative engines operate on a tighter loop. They crawl differently, favor authoritative answers, and reward websites that update often. Consistency matters, but so does speed. The window to get ahead is shorter, and the cost of falling behind stacks up fast.

This strategy worked because it didn’t sit still. We updated, tracked, re-optimized, and did it again, sometimes multiple times in a single day.

It wasn’t just about getting pages into a good position with SEO for ChatGPT, it was about keeping that position. Once the AI starts quoting your content, your competitors don’t just have to outwrite you, they have to outsignal you. That means content, backlinks, brand mentions, and technical clarity all working together, all the time.

Key Takeaways

  • AI search isn’t a trend—it’s already reshaping how people find and trust information.
  • Generative engines like ChatGPT and Gemini favor fast, clear, structured content over clever copy.
  • Optimizing FAQs with brand repetition, direct answers, and keyword-rich phrasing helps AI choose your content.
  • Offsite signals—press, placements, and mentions—still matter. Even unlinked citations can influence LLM outputs.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) moves quicker than traditional SEO. You don’t have six months. You have six hours.
  • Ranking in AI doesn’t mean showing up in blue links. It means getting quoted directly in answers that users trust and act on.

The brands that adapt are getting found. The ones that don’t are quietly disappearing.
