Advice When Searching for a Digital Marketing Job

If you’re in the middle of a job search (or just starting to think about one), here’s some guidance that might help you find something that actually fits—not just something that pays the bills.

Study the job posting.

Like, really read it. Beyond the title and the buzzwords, does the actual work sound like something you’d enjoy and be successful at doing day in and day out?

Don’t just apply to every job listing you can get your hands on. Looking for a job is stressful. We get it. And the financial necessity of getting a job as quickly as possible is often all too real.

You can make your efforts applying for jobs more efficient if you focus on a particular kind of work. By identifying a type of work that you think you might enjoy and do well, you can bring order to what is sometimes a chaotic search.

With a kind of work in mind, you can go after pertinent positions with purpose. You can spend fewer hours applying to jobs that really only lie on the periphery of your interests and skill set.

Do a little digging on the company.

What are they about? What do they post on social media? Do they seem like a place you’d feel good showing up to every day—even virtually?

Applying for a job isn’t just about displaying yourself in the best possible light to potential employers. It’s also about investigating these companies that you’re applying to.

You need to know what you’re signing up for. They need to know that you’re interested.

At DOM, candidates stand out when they ask about our “No Jerks” Policy or inquire about case studies that we’ve conducted.

Showing an organization that you’ve looked deeper than the job posting is a way to set yourself apart.

If you love the company culture but aren’t sure whether it’s the right time, reach out to the company to see whether you can submit your materials for future consideration.

For example, you can leave your resume on DOM’s desk by joining our talent network. Even if there isn’t a current online marketing job opening at our agency that matches your skills, we’d love to connect and save your resume for opportunities down the road.

Looking for a career in digital marketing?

Check in with your goals.

Will this role move you closer to where you want to go? It doesn’t have to be a dream job, but it should help you grow or stretch in the right direction.

The open positions out there aren’t likely to be a word-for-word description of your ideal work situation. But don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good.

Look for jobs that are in the field you’re interested in. Consider positions that are perhaps one level up in seniority from where you are now. Challenging yourself can be a great motivator, and it shows recruiters that you want to grow with a new company.

During your interview process, ask about growth opportunities. How does the company quantify and reward stellar performance?

Within our teams at DOM, we check in on personal goals in quarterly conversations. These meetings are an opportunity for team members and their supervisors to share feedback and highlight the good work they’ve done that quarter.

It’s also an accountability checkpoint. Supervisors can guide a teammate back on track during these conversations.

At DOM, we help each other set personal goals that contribute to the overall success of the agency.

Be yourself in interviews.

We know, easier said than done. But it’s better to be hired for you than a version of yourself you’re trying to force.

There’s no point in putting on an act in an interview that you’d then have to maintain for your whole time in the job. Be professional. Be the best and most authentic version of yourself.

Our Creative Services Team handles everything from website design and development to social media management and content creation.

You also want to stay true to yourself in job interviews because that is also your chance to interview the company. You are considering, after all, spending 40 hours or more a week doing work and interacting with people at this organization.

You’re interviewing in part to see whether the company would value your contribution and value you as a person. But also to have a better understanding of who you would be working with and if that aligns with who you are at your core— because after a while, if the company isn’t a match for your values, you can become frustrated and this will end up working poorly for both sides.

Ask the questions that matter to you.

Salary and benefits are important, but so are things like team vibe, communication style, work-life balance, or whether you’ll have space to share ideas.

Ask the standard things that need to be asked.

  • What’s the healthcare plan like?
  • Is there a 401k plan?
  • How much in-person vs. virtual work is expected?

At our agency, we find value in a hybrid approach – requiring everyone together on Thursdays. It’s important for us to have a place where the team can meet face-to-face to have a more personal bond with their coworkers.

Our office building is also open Monday to Friday, and team members come to the office more frequently than required for collaboration and learning.

Beyond these questions, really sit with your thoughts and see what comes to mind when you think about spending a good chunk of your waking hours interacting with a company.

  • How does the company promote the development of its employees?
  • Is there a path to career advancement?
  • Does the business encourage community by sponsoring social events?

With all the factors at play, the best job may not be the one that offers you the highest starting salary.

  • Will you be happy there?
  • Will you like who you are doing the kind of work the company does?

These are the kinds of questions you should ruminate about before heading into a job interview.
