Pittsburgh is set to become the playing field for the NFL’s biggest stage. Crazed football fans from all across the country will soon flock to the North Shore and surrounding areas to both cheer and jeer their favorite team’s selections.

The NFL Draft is a premier tourist attraction for sports fans, with 2026 being the first time it’s been held in the Steel City. It’s surely a football event, but the sales and marketing opportunities that stem from an influx of potential new buyers should have local business owners jumping for joy like TJ Watt after a clutch sack.

Companies that prepare ahead of time will have an even better chance of capitalizing on potential new customers.

It’s Draft month. Your brand is officially on the clock.

Ready or Not, Local Pittsburgh Businesses Are In the Spotlight

From multiple Stanley Cup Championship parades to Picklesburgh and the Eras Tour, Pittsburgh is no stranger to large crowds filling the city streets.

NFL Draft weekend will inevitably draw in national media, diehard fans, content creators, brands chasing viral moments and probably some Yinzers who just want to say they were there when it happened.

As everyone’s bouncing between the North Shore, Point State Park, Station Square, the Strip District, Lawrenceville, South Side, and all of the surrounding neighborhoods, chances are high that phones will be out the whole time, with every interaction having a chance to live longer online than the actual moment itself.

Content coming from local businesses leading up to and during the draft can’t feel forced. Authenticity will undoubtedly win. And that’s exactly what performs best right now.

Think of it as homefield advantage.

Selling Is Important, But Don’t Fumble Authenticity

A lot of businesses are going to think in terms of promotions, discounts, specials, and probably way too many themed menu items for the ‘Gram.

That’s fine, but forgettable.

Football is Pittsburgh’s native language.

No one wants to see a place suddenly act like a sports bar if it’s not. No one’s buying a forced “Here We Go” caption from a brand that’s never said it before.

But if the identity is already there, lean into it.

Absolutely run social media advertising campaigns and post consistently on native social media platforms for organic discovery. That’s how you’re going to draw in new visitors.

How your brand shows up in the moment matters, but what it feels like to interact with you when the city is buzzing might matter even more.

Start thinking like you’re hosting rather than running a campaign.

If someone walks into your establishment wearing a customized Fernando Mendoza Raiders jersey, talking about a 3rd round sleeper they think would be the perfect complement to Brock Bowers, what happens next?

Is it transactional? Or does it turn into a moment they tell someone about later?

Be the difference between exposure and memory.

Winning Strategies for Pittsburgh Businesses Ahead of the NFL Draft

Your Content is Your Offense

Leading up to the draft, content will be the fastest way to get into the game.

Social media posts, reels, TikToks, blogs or anything that can get your brand in front of hundreds of new eyes quickly to establish credibility early will be helpful.

A video of someone talking about your product or service is going to perform 10x better than a graphic highlighting that same product or service (which absolutely pains me to admit as a designer).

When something feels real, people are more inclined to interact with it, allowing for even more organic visibility.

Don’t Fumble Consistency

Immediacy signals presence. It tells people you’re not just watching, you’re in it.

But it shouldn’t only happen for a 3-day stretch when the NFL Draft is in town.

New followers. New eyes. People who discovered you because of one good post or one shared moment are great in theory, but if there’s no plan after that, it’s like a Russell Wilson-led drive down the field inevitably stalling in the red zone.

Keep showing up and keep telling stories. Let people who found you during the draft see what your business was all about beforehand, and what you are like when things go back to normal afterwards.

2026 Digital Marketing Mock Draft 1.0: Pittsburgh Business Edition

The NFL Draft is a cultural moment, albeit a sports one, that drives thousands of individuals to the host location every year. Lucky for us, this year it’s in our backyard.

This is a totally unique time for local businesses. Pittsburgh has never hosted the NFL Draft. The city hasn’t seen an influx of traffic like this since the town’s last championship in 2018.

That’s brand equity you can’t buy. Be a part of the experience.

Businesses that effectively tap in ahead of the draft won’t just get exposure; they might just get remembered.

We’re drafting the best, most effective strategies and services to help businesses win at all levels ahead of the NFL Draft.

Pick #1: Organic Social Media

NFL DRAFT COMP: FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK

No debate in the room. Free brand awareness, daily reps and direct connection to the people who actually buy from you.

Organic social media is your quarterback. It sets the tone for your brand online. If this position struggles, the whole offense looks off.

We’ve seen businesses try to skip this and go straight to ads and funnels without an established core.

Pittsburghers know this feeling all too well. We’ve experienced it since Ben Roethlisberger retired. You can only get so far with a stopgap solution.

Organic social builds familiarity, trust and recognition. It’s where your voice lives and your brand stops being a logo and starts being a personality people recognize in a crowded feed.

If this position hits, everything else gets easier. Your ads convert better. Your website traffic increases. Your content influences more than just likes and shares.

Miss here, and you’re constantly playing from behind.

Pick #2: Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

NFL DRAFT COMP: FRANCHISE LEFT TACKLE

It’s not a flashy pick. Doesn’t trend on LinkedIn. Doesn’t get the same love it used to.

Still vital to successful digital marketing efforts.

SEO is your blindside protector. It keeps everything clean and gives your offense time to operate.

Without it, your website gets buried. Your content never gets seen. Your long-term discoverability takes a hit you won’t notice until it’s too late.

Strong technical structure. Smart keyword strategy. Content that actually answers questions.

It’s not optional.

Especially now, with GEO entering the league, SEO needs to evolve. Structuring information so it can be pulled, quoted, and trusted by AI systems, not just ranking pages.

The businesses that treat SEO like an afterthought will feel pressure consistently.

Like Joe Thomas or Penei Sewall, this is a pick that will make an impact on your business for years.

Pick #3: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

NFL DRAFT COMP: SENIOR BREAKOUT EDGE RUSHER

There was a lot of buzz after a solid 2025, but then the combine hit. Data started coming out. Now everyone’s scrambling to move up and wants to fit into the AI puzzle.

GEO. Generative Engine Optimization.

Call it the new edge rusher. Disruptive, fast, changes how the game is played.

This is about showing up inside ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI-driven search responses and being the answer before anyone even clicks.

Right now, most businesses aren’t built for it.

They’re still writing like it’s 2015: chasing keywords without context and missing how content is being interpreted, summarized and served.

The ceiling here is ridiculous.

Businesses that aren’t afraid of the character concerns will certainly reap the benefits. And just like the 2000s Patriots teams, you’ll feel like you have the opposition’s playbook in the palm of your hands. We think this becomes foundational faster than people expect. Not replacing SEO, but sitting right next to it, causing problems for anyone ignoring it.

A little risky, but a high upside pick.If GEO could clean up its act, it would be the consensus 1.01.

Pick #4: Website Optimization

NFL DRAFT COMP: OFF-BALL LINEBACKER

We’ve all seen it: great marketing, strong social media presence, paid ads driving traffic. And then, you click the website…

Slow, clunky, no clear path forward. Like Le’Veon Bell in a New York Jets jersey.

Website optimization is your Green Dot Linebacker, effectively communicating and aligning all other channels to set up your brand for success. Their awareness is off the charts, so when someone lands on your site, they don’t have to think too hard about what to do next.

This is a true athlete who can do it all.

Speed, layout, clarity, conversion paths. You name it. It’s a safe pick with fewer wasted opportunities, adding value to all other channels you’re operating. Ignore it, and you’re basically asking your defense to improvise every snap.

Pick #5: Social Media Advertising

NFL DRAFT COMP: ELITE WIDE RECEIVER

Now we’re stretching the field. Social ads are your playmakers.

Targeted, scalable and built to create separation fast.

You can dial in audiences, test creative, push offers or retarget warm leads, but here’s the thing: a great receiver still needs a quarterback (see above).

Without strong organic content, your ads feel cold and easy to miss. When organic and paid work together, your offense is clicking. Familiar face, reinforced message, repeated exposure that isn’t forced. It’s explosive when done right. (And when it feels it is being paid appropriately, but that’s the nature of the position in 2026).

Lock it in at 1.05.

Pick #6: PPC Campaigns

NFL DRAFT COMP: SITUATIONAL PASS RUSHER

A bit shocking that ad campaigns have fallen to the 6th pick in this mock draft, but we’re thrilled to invest in this option with an incredible opportunity to increase the ROI of this pick.

PPC is built for intent. Someone’s already searching, looking, close to making a decision.

You show up at the right moment, you win. Simple as that. void focusing solely on the volume. Precision plays a large part here, too. With bad targeting, weak landing pages, and generic copy, money can disappear quickly. When it’s dialed in, it’s one of the most efficient ways to capture existing demand.

Think 3rd and long. You need pressure. You send your guy. That’s PPC.

Pick #7: Digital Design

NFL DRAFT COMP: LOCKDOWN CORNERBACK

One of the most important picks on the board.

All of the picks above show up visually, and they wouldn’t have nearly as much success without a polished, professional look. Design is how your brand is perceived before a single word is read. It’s the difference between Patrick Mahomes and the Cleveland Browns Quarterback Carousel

Strong design builds trust instantly. Weak design creates hesitation you may never recover from. Consistency across platforms, clean visuals, intentional layouts and creative that could make someone stop scrolling for a second. This position locks things down.

The stigma that everyone’s a designer and can use Canva or AI to create stunning visuals is fun and all, until you’re getting tormented by the opposition’s offense, while losing out on leads after conversions take a nosedive.

Pick #8: Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)

NFL DRAFT COMP: GOAL LINE RUNNING BACK

Not too flashy between the 20s, but inside the red zone, your efficiency skyrockets. This is who you hand the ball to.

Conversion Rate Optimization is about finishing drives. You already did the hard part: traffic, attention. Someone clicked. Now what?

Do they buy? Fill out the form? Book the call? Or do they hesitate for half a second and disappear? CRO studies behavior, placement, page flow, clarity and micro-friction you didn’t even realize was there.

Small tweaks that can result in big outcomes: Headline adjustments, cleaner layouts, more direct CTAs, etc..

That’s the difference between settling for 3 and punching it in for 6. Every visit starts to carry more weight, efficiency and return without being as reliant on more traffic.

Pick #9: Google Analytics

NFL DRAFT COMP: CENTER

Someone has to see the whole field.

Google Analytics doesn’t score, get clicks or convert leads. But it tells you why things are or aren’t working. Where people came from, where they dropped off and what paths actually lead to revenue versus what just looks good on paper.

Without this, you’re scrambling, calling plays based on vibes, celebrating vanity metrics and missing the real story. But with analytics dialed in, you adjust in real time. Double down on what works and cut what’s not and spot problems before they turn into losses.

Installation is only step 1. Clean tracking, proper event setup, and comprehending data all play a major part in successfully anchoring your website. Numbers don’t lie, but they don’t explain themselves either.

Pick #10: Retargeting

NFL DRAFT COMP: DEVELOPMENTAL QUARTERBACK

This one’s interesting. Raw talent, high ceiling, needs coaching.

Retargeting will find the most success in a position where it can soak in all of the information from others. With time, it could become an incredibly valuable piece of the marketing puzzle.

Someone visited your site, added a product to their cart, started filling out a form, read a blog and then left. That’s not a lost lead. That’s an unfinished play.

Retargeting lets you stay in front of those people. Reminding them, nudging them and bringing them back when the timing’s right.

When it’s done well, it feels natural.

We’ve all seen that one ad that chases you around the internet. That’s how you send people running for the hills.

This pick needs development: smart segmentation, thoughtful creative, controlled frequency and messaging that evolves based on behavior. If and when a team invests the time, retargeting could turn into a reliable contributor, driving conversions from traffic you already paid for
